ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams will wear their royal blue and yellow gold throw back jerseys twice this season to commemorate two of the most memorable games in team history, the team announced today.
The Rams will don the 1999-era throwbacks when the host the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 3, and St. Louis will wear the vintage uniforms again on Dec. 22 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Following the 1999 season, the Rams defeated the Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game to advance to the franchise's second Super Bowl appearance. A week later, St. Louis defeated the Titans in one of the most thrilling finishes in Super Bowl history. The win gave the Rams their first World Championship.
"Our throwback jerseys have evoked great fan support and passion over the past few years, and with a home schedule that features both Tennessee and Tampa Bay, we have a unique opportunity to wear our throwback jerseys against opponents that remind fans of the joy that St. Louis Rams football can bring our community," Rams Executive Vice President of Football Operations/C.O.O. Kevin Demoff said. "Some of our fans' greatest memories involve the Buccaneers and Titans games from the 1999 postseason, and this is a great way to celebrate those pinnacle moments in franchise history while wearing the colors of the 1999 championship team."
The Rams wore their throwbacks just once during the 2012 season, and that afternoon provided one of the team's most exciting contests of the season as St. Louis defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 16-13, on the final play of overtime.
Brockers looking good
Defensive tackle Michael Brockers missed the first three games of the 2012 season because of a high ankle sprain. He came back and played well, but Brockers believes things will be even better after totally healing and also having February surgery for bone spurs in his other ankle.
After a full offseason in the conditioning program, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said, "Mike did a great job coming back off the high ankle and really finished up strong toward the second half of the season. He's worked very hard. He's changed his body and we think he can be a dominating player in the front. ... He's gained some weight, but it's good weight.
"He's gained a tremendous amount of strength. (Line) coach (Mike) Waufle, like the rest of them, is doing a good job with his hands and his understanding."
Brockers said he increased his weight from 315 to 325 by working out and eating right. He said, "I'm as quick as I was at 315. I feel stronger and faster. And, I'm more comfortable, knowing my plays and being able to go really fast."
As for the team's defense, Brockers said, "We can be a dominant force. Everyone is excited to show the world what we can do."
