Rockford downs Grizzlies, claims three-game series

Special to the News-DemocratAugust 3, 2013

Matt Greener drove in two runs on a two-out single in the seventh inning and the Rockford Aviators edged the Gateway Grizzlies 6-5 Friday night in the series finale at Aviators Stadium in Loves Park.

The Greener two-run single came after the Grizzlies put up four runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 4-1 deficit and take a lead.

Chris McClendon drove in two runs on a single and Jon Myers gave the Grizzlies the lead on a two-run double in the seventh.

Gateway (40-27) dropped three of four games in the series to leave it only a game and a half ahead of Schaumburg in the West Division. The last two losses in the series were by one run.

Myers blasted a solo homer in the second inning to give the Grizzlies the first lead of the game.

Rockford then scored four unanswered runs with a run in the second inning, two in the third inning and one in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Matt Sergey got the start for the Grizzlies and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings. The right-hander had no walks and struck out six batters. Sergey picked up a no-decision.

Right-hander Jason Sullivan (2-1) took the loss after giving up the two runs in the seventh inning.

Myers went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three runs batted in to pace Gateway.

The Grizzlies return to GCS Ballpark on Saturday to start a series with River City. Right-hander Jake Stephens gets the start for the series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
