Three fishermen discovered the murdered body of a 20-year-old, black man early this morning in the lake at Horseshoe Lake State Park near Pontoon Beach, according to police.

The man's body was found just before 6 a.m. floating near the northern shore of the lake, Illinois State Police Special Agent Devin Watts said.

Police are not releasing the man's identity until family members can be notified of his death, though, they believe he is a resident of the metro-east.

Police say evidence shows the victim was murdered. However they have not released how the man was killed.

"We are still in the process of getting information from the (Madison County) Coroner's Office and investigating other leads at this time," Watts said.

An autopsy will be performed by the Madison County Coroner's Office on Monday.

The fishermen called Pontoon Beach Police at 5:54 a.m. when they discovered the body in the water near the boat launch ramp, police say. The Pontoon Beach Police then requested the help of the Illinois State Police in the investigation.

Police are asking for anyone with information about the murder to call Crime Stoppers at 866-371-TIPS or Illinois State Police at 618-346-3760.
