Collinsville approves next streetscape phase

— The next steps in Collinsville's "streetscape" program have been approved by the council.

The council approved interagency agreements between the city and the Illinois Department of Transportation to go forward with phase three of the streetscape project. Previous phases have renovated the Main Street area in sections, adding urban-standard curbs and gutters, new sidewalks and crosswalks and replaced streetlights with old-fashioned street lamps.

Street director Rod Cheatham said the city's cost of the project would be $217,000 for construction and $131,000 for the design, encompassing 20 percent of the total cost of $1.2 million. It will renovate Center Street from Main to Church streets, and Church Street from Clinton Street to Illinois 159.

Phase three includes redesigning the area around City Hall to match the appearance of Main Street with new landscaping, road resurfacing, handicapped-accessible sidewalks, stamped-brick crosswalks and old-fashioned street lamps.

Cheatham said that bids would be let in September and some work would begin in November, with most of the heavy construction in the spring.

The fourth phase is still in the design stages, with Collinsville's designs submitted to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Estimated at $1.8 million, it will address sidewalks, curbs, drainage and street lighting on the east side of Illinois 159 along Main Street, Clay and Aurora streets.

The council's vote was unanimous.
