TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — A four-run third inning helped propel the Traverse City Beach Bums to a 6-4 win over the Gateway Grizzlies Monday night at Wuerfel Park.
Traverse City (45-30) picked up the series win and pushed the Grizzlies (45-31) into second place in the Frontier League West Division for the first time since June 12th. Gateway now trails Schaumburg by a half game.
Traverse City roughed up Grizzlies starting pitcher Edison Alvarez (0-2) in the third inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Chase Burch drilled a two-run double in the inning to drive in his fifth and sixth runs of the series.
Alvarez allowed five runs on six hits in four and two thirds innings.
A string of three singles led to the first run of the game for the Grizzlies in the fourth inning. Landon Hernandez, Jet Butler and Jon Myers all singled before Michael Pair brought in Hernandez on an RBI groundout to make it 4-1.
Sean Gusrang gave the Beach Bums a 5-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI single, but the Grizzlies answered with a run in the seventh on a Jonathan Johnson RBI groundout and a run in the eighth on an error to draw within two runs.
Traverse City added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and the Grizzlies comeback in the ninth fell short with only one run on a Johnson RBI double.
Jose Flores, Butler, Myers and Alex Guthrie all had two hits for the Grizzlies, who out-hit the Beach Bums 11-to-9.
The Grizzlies have an off day Tuesday before returning to GCS Ballpark Wednesday night for the start of a series with the River City Rascals. Right-hander Matt Sergey (2-1) gets the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05.
