Arthur Johnson Foundation plans black-tie dinner/auction

The Arthur Johnson Foundation will hold a Black Tie Glamour Gala at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 to raise funds for the Flash Johnson Boxing Gym in East St. Louis.

The dinner/auction will be at Four Points by Sheraton, 319 Fountains Parkway in Fairview Heights. Doors open at 7 p.m. for "mingling" time and dinner will be served at 7:30.

Tickets are $50; make checks payable o Arthur Johnson Foundation, P.O. Box 882, O'Fallon, IL 62269. The reservation deadline is Tuesday.

The event will include an auction, including such items as an Albert Pujols drawing, Don King boxing gloves that will be signed by Johnson, and a collector's Gold Signature Wheaties Box featuring Muhammad Ali.

Entertainent will be provided by Stephen Koritta and Arthur Johnson Jr., a former world champion purcussionist.

Arthur "Flash" Johnson, of O'Fallon, went from growing up in an East St. Louis housing project to winning four world and 12 national boxing championships. He won a gold medal at the 1986 World Championship Games and represented the United States as a flyweight in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, advancing to the quarterfinals. He fought professionally from 1992 to 2003.

Johnson said he wants "to help kids in East St. Louis live their dreams, too."
