Belleville Police have arrested a man believed responsible for two armed robberies at the Circle K convenience store on West Main Street.

The Circle K convenience store at 2709 W. Main St. was robbed by a man with a rifle about 12:45 a.m. Thursday and police believe the suspect is also responsible for the July 22 armed robbery of the same convenience store.

The man confronted the store clerk and demanded cash early Thursday. The clerk handed over the cash and the suspect left the store and headed down North 28th Street. One customer was in the store at the time and a second customer in the parking lot saw the man holding a rifle, according to the Belleville Police.

Police apprehended the suspect after a short foot chase. He was found hiding behind a bush near a home on Foster and taken into custody without incident shortly after 2 a.m. after a search that lasted about 90 minutes. Belleville police found the rifle the man was armed with in a yard.

Officers from the Belleville Police Department, St. Clair County Sheriff's Department and Swansea Police Department were involved in the search.

No one was injured in the robbery.

The man remains in custody at the Belleville Police Department and police expect to apply for charges Friday.
