Charges have been filed against an East St. Louis man accused of stealing a car in Fairview Heights and then crashing it near the Swansea police station.

Charles H. Joshway Jr., 43, of the 2200 block of Gaty Avenue, has been charged by the St. Clair County State's attorney with two counts of burglary. The case was investigated by the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force and the Fairview Heights Police Department.

Joshway is suspected of being responsible for several vehicle break-ins in the area of Veach Drive in Fairview Heights, where he is accused of stealing a 2004 Dodge Neon SRT on Tuesday. Joshway was arrested early Tuesday after he fled from police and crashed the Neon into an embankment near the Swansea Police Department. He was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released into police custody. During the investigation police determined that the suspect was involved in about five other car break-ins in Fairview Heights in the Veach Drive area. After the suspect's arrest, several victims provided descriptions of missing items. The descriptions matched items found in the stolen car when the suspect was arrested.

Additional charges are pending against Joshway. He remains in police custody in lieu of a $100,000 bail.
