East St. Louis Police add 10 to ranks

News-DemocratAugust 20, 2013

The East St. Louis Police Department added 10 new faces Tuesday as five police officers and five jailers swore that they would protect the city.

The ceremony on Tuesday in the council chambers at City Hall drew about 35 family member and friends plus city leaders and police officers.

The jailers will help the department recover after four jailers were lost to a surprise drug test in May.

Integrity was the theme as Mayor Alvin Parks discussed the background checks and testing the new hires faced. Police Chief Michael Floore told the recruits that at the end of watch, all they had was their name and their honor to stand on.

One recruit, Taneisha Diggs, is the daughter of East St. Louis Police detective Darlene Diggs. Parks said this was the first time the city has had a mother-daughter team in the police ranks.
