A woman who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 5-year-old girl was given a 20-year prison sentence on Tuesday.

Danielle Armstrong, 23, of Alton, pleaded guilty in May to predatory criminal sexual abuse of a child, a Class X felony. She and her husband, 34-year-old David Brian Armstrong, were charged after the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services notified Alton Police of an investigation in 2012.

The case was investigated by Alton Police, DCFS and the Child Advocacy Center. They determined that the girl had been abused from July 2011 to July 2012.

The Armstrongs pleaded guilty in an open plea with a cap of 20 years; they have been in custody at the Madison County Jail since that time.

Danielle Armstrong will have to serve 85 percent of her sentence, according to the sentence by Madison County Circuit Judge Richard Tognarelli.

The child is in the custody of a family member, according to the Madison County State's Attorney's office.

David Armstrong is scheduled to be sentenced next week by Madison County Circuit Judge James Hackett.
