The Fairview Heights City Council on Tuesday night approved a $612,700 renovation of the community center on Bunkum Road.
The council voted to permit Mayor Gail Mitchell to enter into a contract with Morrissey Construction Co. to renovate the interior of the community center at 10025 Bunkum Road so it can be used as a community recreation center.
Ward 2 Alderman Roger Lowry told the council the bid came in under what had been anticipated.
The council also gave approval to a contract to replace all the outdoor fitness equipment at Everett Moody Park. The total bid for the equipment replacement is for $27,895 from NuToys Leisure Products, Inc.
The money to replace the equipment comes from a $10,000 donation from the Fairview Heights Homecoming Association and a grant through the St. Clair County Parks Grants Commission.
The equipment will replace the outdoor fitness stations found around the walking/jogging path at the park.
In other business, the council approved a request by Michael and Rebecca Collins to open a day spa at 6540 N. Illinois.
The 3,600-square-foot business, MassageLuxe Day Spa, will provide massages, facials and product sales.
