An East St. Louis man has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of car break-ins in Columbia.

Charles H. Joshway Jr., 43, of 2219 Gaty Ave., faces 11 counts of burglary from a motor vehicle and two counts of criminal damage to property, according to Police Chief Joe Edwards. He is in custody at the St. Clair County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

Edwards said the crimes, which came to the attention of the police department Aug. 11, happened in the north end of the city, on Cascade, Evergreen and Glenwood drives.

"The Columbia Police Department would like to thank the members of the public who came forward and provided us with multiple leads," Edwards said. He also said the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force, the Fairview Heights Police Department, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department, the Granite City Police Department, and Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz deserve credit for helping to solve the crime and make the arrest.
