Cards put Westbrook on DL because of lower back strain

News-DemocratAugust 23, 2013

The St. Louis Cardinals on Friday put starting pitcher Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back strain.

The team recalled right-hander Carlos Martinez from Class AAA Memphis to take Westbrook's place on the 25-man roster.

Martinez is 0-1 in 11 games for the Cardinals earlier this year, striking out 13 batters in 16 innings, and was 5-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 12 starts for Memphis. He wears No. 62.

Westbrook has allowed 38 hits and 28 earned runs in 26 innings in his last five starts, and is winless in those five outings.
