ST. LOUIS — Adam Wainwright posted his 15th victory of the season and drove in a run to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over Atlanta 3-1 on Friday night at Busch Stadium.
How it went
Back-to-back doubles by Yadier Molina and Jon Jay against Kris Medlen (10-12) in the second gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. But Freddie Freeman's RBI single against Wainwright (15-7) with two outs in the sixth pulled Atlanta into a 1-1 tie. Matt Holliday hit his 17th home run, a solo shot against Medlen in the sixth, to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Wainwright's sacrifice fly in the seventh extended the lead to 3-1 in an inning that opened with a double by Molina and a single by Jay that knocked out Medlen.

Wainwright allowed six hits, walked none and struck out nine. He moved past Chris Carpenter and into third place on the Cardinals' career strikeout list with 1,090.
