Classes scheduled after 5 p.m. at the Belleville campus of Southwestern Illinois College will be held Monday after power was restored Monday afternoon.

However, power to the Granite City campus remained out at 4:30 p.m. and wasn't expected to be back on until around 7 p.m., said Ameren spokesman Brian Bretsch. The college cancelled all classes that start before 6 p.m. Monday in Granite City.

The Belleville campus experienced a power outage that was restored around 1:30 p.m., according to Brian Bretsch with Ameren. Bretsch said the outage was caused by an equipment malfunction at a substation and impacted about 1,500 Ameren customers.

The Granite City outage is affecting about 2,400 Ameren customers, including the Granite City campus, and crews are working to restore power. The outage was caused by a malfunctioning piece of equipment at a substation in Mitchell, Bretsch added.

Bretsch said Ameren is looking in to the power outage at the Granite City Campus.
