Lyons, Cardinals set to face Cincinnati

News-DemocratAugust 26, 2013

— A stretch of 13 games in 13 days against NL Central championship contenders Cincinnati and Pittsburgh is on tap for the St. Louis Cardinals.

First on the list is third-place Cincinnati (74-57) at 6:08 p.m. Monday, which trails the Cardinals (76-54) and Pittsburgh (76-54) by 2 1/2 games with a little more than one month left in the season.

"I think right now, our guys are just picturing every game as like a postseason game. I think we've been doing that all season, though," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said in the dugout Monday. "At least that's how we talk. You keep hearing the same things being said by people around you. The veteran players on this team know you kind of have the responsibility of playing the game that way.

"It helps with two things. One, it helps break the season down into being as good as you can be every night. Two, if you are fortunate enough to make it to the postseason, you're not going to be shocked. You're not going to be out of water, because it's the same way you've been playing all season long. It's something we believe in."

Rookie left-hander Tyler Lyons (2-4, 5.09 ERA) will start for the Cardinals against Reds right-hander Mike Leake (11-5, 3.12 ERA). Lyons is 0-1 with a 6.75 in one career start against the Reds. Leake is 2-4 with a 5.77 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.

"(In) the outings we've seen him very good, he's controlled the counts," Matheny said of Lyons, 25. "He's been making good pitches on both sides with fastballs to establish (himself) and then using his secondary (pitches). That's just typical pitching."

Carlos Beltran will not play for St. Louis. Allen Craig replaces him in right field and Matt Adams takes over at first base. Slumping Pete Kozma (3-for-42) will yield shortstop to Daniel Descalso.
