Court discussion stops short

August 26, 2013

I read with interest the BND's recent report of the "State of the Judiciary" discussion hosted by the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce.

It's unfortunate that this public discussion didn't address the long-held reputation of our local legal system as a haven for lawsuit abuse.

I wonder how local citizens feel about the fact that both Madison and St. Clair counties have long been ranked among the worst in the country for legal fairness? Or that more than half of the country's asbestos cases find their way here? That certainly can't be an accident; but accident or not, we locals pay the cost in more ways than one.

With the economic climate as tough as it is in Illinois, including the second highest unemployment rate in the nation, the least we should expect is a fair, honest and trustworthy legal system.

Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any public discussion to find the will and the way to make that the case.
