Longtime Mater Dei High School volleyball coach Fred Rakers will be honored at 7 p.m. Tuesday prior to the Belleville East-Mater Dei match in Breese as part of the "Legendary Night for Fred."

Rakers, a Hall of Fame coach and former National Coach of the Year who won more than 1,000 games and six state championships, was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Special commemorative t-shirts will be available for sale and many of Rakers' former players are expected to be on hand for the special night. A reception for the 68-year-old Rakers following the match will be held in the school cafeteria.

Rakers' career record at mater Dei was 1,046 wins 200 losses and seven ties, giving him the second highest victory total in Illinois volleyball history. His Knights' teams also made 20 state tournament trips before he retired in 2010 following the first of back-to-back state championships.

Rakers was an assistant coach the following year when his son, Chad Rakers, led the Knights to their seventh state title.
