Stop demonizing Trayvon Martin

August 27, 2013

I'd like to correct the misinformation being put out about Trayvon Martin. According to some people he was a 6 foot, 3 inch musclebound behemoth. In actuality he was 5 feet 11 inches and 158 pounds at the time of his death. This according to his parents and the coroner.

So many people are in such a hurry to demonize this boy they ignore his humanity and the pain of his parents. These are people who lost their only son for no better reason than he was black. As if this loss wasn't enough, heartless individuals who wouldn't know Trayvon from Adam are describing him as a monster.

He was just a kid on the cusp of manhood. He'd gone to the store to buy Skittles and an iced tea. He was on the way home, his hood pulled up to ward off the rain and on the phone with a friend. How could anyone see this as a threat?

We all know the tragedy. We all know the outcome of the trial. It was a heartbreaking disappointment for his parents. It is just cruel to continue these slanderous attacks on their son. For what purpose? Sadistic pleasure?

Have compassion, people. How many of you who have spread these lies are in the amen corner Sunday morn? Just what are you learning there?
