— A landlord has been charged with knowingly renting an unsafe property to a family in Edwardsville.

Steven Veith, 59, of Glen Carbon has been charged with criminal housing management, a Class 4 felony. He is accused of renting a single-family residence at 624 Hill Lane in Edwardsville that had been deemed uninhabitable.

According to the Edwardsville Police Department, the house had numerous issues including a collapsed floor in the bathroom, exposed insulation, missing smoke alarms, improper wiring and poor venting of a gas hot water heater.

"This city's government remains dedicated to addressing quality of life issues and will aggressively investigate and seek prosecution against those who are willing to take advantage of tenants by renting unsafe property," said City Administrator Ben Dickmann.

Veith allegedly had been notified that the house was in violation of property codes and was unsafe for occupancy, but rented the house to a family anyway, according to police.

"Citizens living in our community should know they have a right to be safe in their homes, whether they rent or own the property," said Mayor Hal Patton, appluading the city departments for working together to investigate the issue.

If convicted, Veith would face probation up to three years in prison.
