EDWARDSVILLE — An Alton man convicted of sexual abuse of a 5-year-old girl was sentenced Wednesday to serve an 18-year prison sentence -- which is two years fewer than what his wife was sentenced to serve for abusing the girl.
David Armstrong, 34, pleaded guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony. He and his wife, Danielle Armstrong, both pleaded guilty on May 14, but were sentenced separately by different judges.
Danielle Armstrong was sentenced last week to 20 years in prison by Madison County Circuit Judge Richard Tognarelli.
David Armstrong was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years by Circuit Judge James Hackett.
Madison County State's Attorney's spokesman Stephanee Smith said that prosecutors had asked for 20 years on both defendants.
The victim is now in the custody of a family member under supervision from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. In the investigation by state officials and Alton Police, it was discovered that the girl had been sexually abused for over a year before it was discovered in July 2012.
Both Armstrongs remain in custody at the Madison County Jail. Each will have to serve 85 percent of their sentences.
