Rollover crash closes Interstate 255; driver airlifted to area hospital

News-DemocratAugust 29, 2013

The northbound lanes of Interstate 255 at Interstate 64 were closed for almost half an hour Thursday afternoon after a vehicle struck the concrete barrier and rolled.

Joseph E. Sikora, 52, of Collinsville, was driving in the construction zone in that area, which was reduced down to one lane, when he lost control of his vehicle, over-corrected, and struck the median wall just before 6 p.m. Sikora's vehicle rolled over and he was trapped. Emergency personnel with the Illinois State Police, MedStar, Abbot Ambulance, Arch Helicopter, the State Park Fire Department and the Caseyville Police Department all helped to remove Sikora from his vehicle and clean up the interstate to get traffic moving again. The interstate was closed for 29 minutes, according to Illinois State Police Spokesman Trooper Calvin Dye Jr.

Sikora was airlifted by Arch helicopter to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Dye said.

Sikora was wearing his seatbelt and was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no one else was injured.
