AP poll: East St. Louis ranked second in state; Althoff is fifth

East St. Louis was the highest-ranked football team in the metro-east Wednesday as the Associated Press released its preseason state football polls.

The Flyers were ranked second behind defending state champion Crete Monee in the Class 6A poll, receiving three first-place votes.

Althoff, which finished second in Class 2A last season, begins the 2013 season ranked fifth in Class 4A. Also earning votes in the 4A state poll were Columbia (11th), Marquette (12th) and Mater Dei (14th).

O'Fallon begins the season ranked sixth in the 8A state poll while Southwestern Conference rival Edwardsville is seventh in Class 7A.

Highland continues to draw preseason attention and nailed down the No. 13 spot in the 5A state rankings, with Cahokia also earning votes. Central was 15th in Class 3A.

With an experienced lineup returning under new coach Tim Nelson, the Dupo Tigers open the season ranked 13th in Class 2A.
