Financial adviser and Southern Illinois University Carbondale graduate Joel Sambursky has been appointed to the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees.
Sambursky is a financial adviser at Liberty Wealth Management LLC in Carbondale and serves on the board of directors for the Carbondale Community Arts. He is a former president and executive director of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce.
He holds a MBA and B.S. from Southern Illinois University. As an SIU student, Sambursky played quarterback on the university's NCAA Division I-AA team from 2002-2005 and was inducted into the Saluki Hall of Fame in 2012 for having led the Salukis to three straight football conference championships and appearances at the NCAA National Playoffs.
This appointment comes three months after a months-long dispute between the Illinois Senate and Gov. Pat Quinn ended with the appointment of two new members to the board. The dispute began when Gov. Pat Quinn removed three trustees who represented the Edwardsville campus. The Senate rejected all of his replacements, none of whom had ties to SIUE. The Edwardsville campus reacted by demanding more representation the board. In May, the governor approved two new members representing SIUE to the board.
