Belleville man faces federal charges in Circle K robberies

A Belleville man now faces federal robbery and firearm charges for allegedly robbing the Circle K gas station in Belleville twice this summer.

London M. Brown, 21, of the 1800 block of Jay Avenue, previously faced felony charges related to the alleged armed robberies in St. Clair County Circuit Court, but a grand jury indicted him on federal charges Wednesday. Generally, those convicted of federal charges face harsher punishment under federal sentencing guidelines.

He was charged Wednesday with two counts of interference with commerce by robbery and a count of possession of a firearm during a crime, according to court documents. He remains in custody in the St. Clair County Jail.

Brown is accused of pointing a rifle at a clerk in the gas station and demanded money on July 22, and then again on Aug. 15, according to court documents. He stole between $100 and $200 in July, and $358 in August.

Brown was arrested after a short foot chase following the robbery in August. He fled the store, heading down North 28th Street, and was found hiding behind a bush near a home on Foster Drive. Police found the rifle in a nearby yard.
