News-DemocratSeptember 10, 2013

— A 24-year-old East St. Louis man was fatally shot early Tuesday at the Orr-Weathers playground and police are looking for the gunman.

Steven Thomas, who lived in Building 3D in the Orr-Weathers complex in the 1400 block of Missouri Avenue, was pronounced dead at Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville at 1:20 a.m., according to Lt. Marion Riddle.

Thomas is the 17th homicide victim in the city this year. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Police do not know the motive for the shooting and they haven't identified any suspects.

But Riddle said, "We are following up on some very good leads."

Police received a call at 12:30 a.m. about a man down in the public housing complex. By the time officers arrived, Thomas had already been taken to Touchette.

Illinois State Police, which usually assists the East St. Louis Police Department in investigating homicides, also is working on this case.

Anyone with information about Thomas' death is asked to call Riddle at 482-6767 or the Illinois State Police at 346-3990.
