ST. LOUIS — Staying hydrated in the heat has been an issue for Shelby Miller at times this season.
Miller will battle the heat, humidity and the Milwaukee Brewers when the St. Louis Cardinals begin the fourth game of their homestand at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Miller (12-9, 3.19 ERA) will be opposed by Wily Peralta (9-14, 4.51 ERA).
"Same thing," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said of the team's plans for aiding Miller. "Just making sure he's real conscious (about) his pregame hydration and getting a lot of electrolytes in him. (Monday) he had an assignment to take in as much water as he possibly could. We're trying make sure he's as hydrated as possible."
Miller's statistics at Busch Stadium give no indication of trouble. He's 7-3 with a 1.92 ERA in 13 starts at home. In 14 road starts, Miller is 5-6 with a 4.46 ERA.
"We've been fortunate; we haven't had too many of these," Matheny said of the sauna-like conditions at Busch Stadium. "I doubt we have too many more. Time will tell."
Matheny said the Cardinals already are cutting back on pregame activities in an attempt to be fresh for games.
"We're at that part of the season where we're actually taking a little less batting practice, a little less repetitions on the field --trying to conserve for guys. They'll get their work done they need to get done and then get back inside."
First baseman/right fielder Allen Craig will miss his fifth consecutive game with a sprained left foot. That means another assignment for Matt Adams. Since Craig went down, Adams is 4-for-18 (.222) with two home runs and two RBIs.
St. Louis has taken the first three games of its nine-game homestand. It swept three games from the Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend to move into first place in the NL Central.
