EDWARDSVILLE — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball coach Paula Buscher will test her 2013-14 team with a rigorous non-conference schedule.
SIUE, coming off its first appearance in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, will play teams from 11 different conferences and nine teams that advanced to post season play in 2012-13.
"We feel we have put together a challenging schedule for our team and are excited to start the season," said Buscher.
The Cougars open the regular season Nov. 10 at Missouri and then move on to face Kansas (Nov. 13). Missouri played in the WNIT last season while Kansas advanced to the NCAA Tournament regional semifinals before falling to Notre Dame.
"We will be in some tough environments on the road which will help us grow as a team and ultimately better prepare us for OVC play," Buscher said.
SIUE opens the regular season home schedule with three consecutive contests. The Cougars face off against Kansas City (Nov. 16), UIC (Nov. 20), and IPFW (Nov. 26).
Two tournaments are on the horizon for the Cougars. SIUE travels to Orlando, Fla., to take on Delaware (Nov. 30) and either Central Florida or Howard (Dec. 1). The Cougars meet Wyoming (Dec. 6) and Air Force (Dec. 7) at the Air Force Classic in Colorado.
The Cougars have road non-conference games with IPFW (Dec. 14), Drake (Dec. 17), and Western Illinois (Dec. 19) as well as a home contest against NJIT (Feb. 3).
The 2013-14 OVC schedule features 16 games with eight at home and eight on the road.
The home contests include Belmont (Dec. 28), Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 4), Morehead State (Jan. 6), Murray State (Jan. 18), Austin Peay (Jan. 20), UT Martin (Feb. 8), Southeast Missouri (Feb. 10), and Eastern Illinois (Mar. 1).
The road games include Tennessee Tech (Jan. 11), Jacksonville State (Jan. 13), UT Martin (Jan. 25), Southeast Missouri (Jan. 27), Eastern Illinois (Feb. 1), Austin Peay (Feb. 15), Murray State (Feb. 17), and Tennessee State (Feb. 24).
