Columbia waits until late to slam door on Dupo

Columbia finally put Cahokia Conference rival Dupo away with three fourth-quarter touchdowns Friday in a 42-21 victory over the Tigers.

Brock McGowan returned to the lineup for Columbia (3-0) and threw a pair of touchdown passes and also scored on a 1-yard run. Dupo (0-3) scored on a 35-yard run by quarterback Brett Aldridge, a 61-yard run by Kyle LaChance and a 16-yard run by Tyler Barnes.

Central 28, Freeburg 27

The Central defense stopped Freeburg's two-point conversion run try with 1:53 remaining as the Cougars held on for a Cahokia Conference win.

Michael Smith had three touchdown runs for Freeburg while Central's Cody Frohn scored on a 21-yard pass and a 14-yard run.

Central quarterback Josh Dunning had a 23-yard TD pass to Jacob Timmermann and a 21-yard TD pass to Frohn, also running one in from 2 yards out.

Carlyle 37, Red Bud 12

Carlyle knocked off Red Bud in a battle of Cahokia Conference unbeatens as quarterback Billy Cummins tossed a pair of TD passes and Alex Voss scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery.

Carlyle (3-0) led 21-6 at halftime and opened the scoring on a 34-yard TD pass from Cummins to Deven Hicks. After Voss's fumble recovery, Red Bud answered on a 9-yard TD run by Addison Gunter. Alex Velazquez and Jordan Foos also had TD runs for Carlyle.

Highland 56, Mattoon 0

Highland moved to 3-0 by overwhelming Mattoon, getting four touchdown runs from Gage Geiger and two more by Andrew Winning and Trevor White.
