Marching Bands compete at Belleville East High School

More than 3,000 fans filled the stands to watch nine bands battle in the annual Belleville East Marching Invitational on Saturday at the Belleville East High School.

Rockwood Summit High School, of Fenton, Mo., captured the overall grand championship, which is awarded to the band with the highest numerical score of the three competing classes.

Fort Zumwalt North High School, of O'Fallon, Mo., earned the Leroy Kirsch Crowd Appeal Award, named after the late Belleville East band director. The Overall 2013 Spirit Award went to Lindbergh High School of St. Louis.

In Class AAA, the bands earned the following awards:

* First Place: Rockwood Summit High School, of Fenton, Mo.

* Second Place: Lindbergh High School, of St. Louis.

* Third place: Fort Zumwalt North High School, of O'Fallon, Mo.

Rockwood earned Best Music, Best Effect and Best Percussion honors as well. Best Auxiliary went to Fort Zumwalt North.

In Class AA, the bands earned the following awards:

* First Place: Edwardsville High School, of Edwardsville.

* Second Place: Francis Howell North High School, of St. Charles, Mo.

* Third Place: Mehlville High School, of St. Louis.

Edwardsville earned Best Music, Best Effect and Best Percussion honors. Francis Howell North earned the Best Auxiliary award.

One band competed in the Class A competition, Wesclin High School, of Trenton, and subsequently earned First Place, Best Music, Best Effect, Best Percussion and Best Auxiliary.
