Mariners take down Cardinals, end five-game losing streak

— James Paxton allowed just two hits in six shutout innings and Kendrys Morales homered Saturday night as the Seattle Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

How it went

Franklin Gutierrez's two-run double against Michael Wacha (3-1) put the Mariners on top in the fifth. Morales' bases-empty homer in the eighth against Tyler Lyons made it 3-0. The Cardinals scored their only run in the eighth when Matt Carpenter doubled with one out, went to third on an infield out and scored on Charlie Furbush's wild pitch. Seattle scored an insurance run in the ninth on Carlos Triunfel's sacrifice fly against Fernando Salas.

Wacha's string of 23 2/3 shutout innings ended when Seattle scored its two fifth-inning runs. ... Danny Farquar pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save. ...
