A Clinton County man died after crashing his all-terrain vehicle into a tree late Saturday night.

Kevin Simonton, 47, of Carlyle, was on his way home just before midnight Saturday on Pollman Road near Carlyle when he crashed his ATV into a tree, said Clinton County Coroner Phillip Moss.

Others who were with Simonton earlier that night took an alternative route. A passerby found Simonton and called police, Moss said.

"It appears that speed was a factor in the accident," Moss said.

Simonton was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, Moss said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Simonton died from head and chest injuries.

Simonton worked at Simonton Hardwood Lumber, his family's sawmill and lumber company.
