Blues get two goals from Lapierre, beat Stars in shootout

Veteran center Maxim Lapierre scored two goals and Vladimir Tarasenko scored during the shootout Sunday to give the St. Louis Blues a 6-5 victory over Dallas in the exhibition opener for both teams.

Lapierre, expected to center the checking line, was signed as a free agent during the offseason.

During the shootout, Dallas' Jamie Benn hit the goalpost against Blues goalie Jake Allen before Tarasenko scored. Allen stopped Tyler Seguin's backhand attempt and also turned away Valeri Nichushkin to nail down the Blues' win.

Dallas took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Erik Cole and Kevin Connauton, but Lapierre scored two goals in a 5 minute, 12 second span of the first period to tie it.

Other Blues' goals were scored by Sebastian Wannstrom and Adam Cracknell. Blues winger Ryan Reaves send the game to overtime when he tied it 5-5 with 8:57 remaining in the third period.

Reaves also had an assist in the game while Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester logged the most ice time with 22 minutes, 12 seconds. Allen allowed five goals on 38 shots.

Rookie Sergey Andronov had two assists for the Blues and Nichushkin had two goals for the Stars.

The Blues return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Tampa Bay.
