Troy school leaders are trying to discover how a kindergartner was allowed to wander out of her school last week and to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

The 5-year-old girl was discovered by passersby walking along a busy highway, Illinois 162, after she walked out of Silver Creek Elementary School Friday morning.

Triad School District leaders believe the child made it off the school bus and into the building but didn't make it to her classroom, instead taking a wrong turn in the hallway and heading out a door.

She wasn't hurt in the incident. School leaders did not say how long the girl is believed to have been outside without supervision.
