The Illinois Department of Transportation will close another interstate highway in the metro-east this weekend to repave the interstate that will connect to the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge under construction.
Beginning Friday, westbound Interstate 55-70 in East St. Louis will be closed from Illinois 203 to Exchange Avenue, where Interstate 64 merges with the road. The work will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and the road will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. Traffic is being detoured to Interstate 255 south and then westbound to Interstate 64, which merges with I-55-70, adding about five miles to drivers' commutes.
Last week, IDOT closed all eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 between Interstate 55-70 and 25th Street in East St. Louis until 9 a.m. Monday as state highway workers repave the interstate to connect with the new bridge. Interstate 64 traffic is being detoured eastbound on I-55-70, then southbound on I-255 until connecting to I-64. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes or take MetroLink.
IDOT also plans to close westbound I-64 during a weekend in October from 18th Street to where I-55-70 merges with I-64. A date has yet to be announced for this closure.
