At the request of the Washington Park Police Department, the Ninth Grade Center in East St. Louis School District 189 was locked down for about an hour Friday afternoon due to a suspect in the surrounding area, according to district officials.

District 189 spokesperson Kim Roberson said the center, located at 3939 Caseyville Ave. in East St. Louis, was locked down from 1:15 p.m. to 2:25 p.m. Friday.

"The individual was never in the building, and there was never an immediate threat inside the building," she said. "The safety of our students is our top priority, and we appreciate the support of local police departments in supporting us in this area."

The Ninth Grade Center has 410 students.
