Betten will be greatly missed

September 24, 2013

With the recent passing of Police Chief John Betten, O'Fallon has lost a great leader and an even greater person.

Betten was one of the most respected and admired people I have ever met. He was an innovator and eloquent speaker with a great sense of humor. There are not enough words to describe how I felt about Betten.

As a former employee of the Fairview Heights Police Department, he was my boss at one time. I knew from the first day I met him that he would one day be a chief of police. He was always fair and always ready to work alongside anyone when there was work to be done.

He will be sorely missed not only in O'Fallon but by all whose lives he touched. He was truly one of the best people I have ever known. I am thankful for him touching my life.
