Lobbying, but for what?

September 24, 2013

Who knew that so many Illinois politicians felt so passionately about the F-35?

The Belleville City Council is one of many local government bodies lobbying U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin to support the $1.5 trillion fighter jet program. Even the St. Clair County Housing Authority chimed in.

Housing authority? City government? What do they know about fighter jets?

It must be a great program. Or maybe they wrote because Jeff Dixon, the son of former Sen. Alan Dixon, or some other lobbyist asked them to do so. Maybe, like Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert, the supporters are so focused on the jobs this spending could create that they are willing to overlook the jet's technical problems and its $1.5 billion in cost overruns.

You know what they say about being careful what you wish for. Especially with sequestration, continuing to fund the F-35 would mean cutting other defense spending. There are just so many tax dollars to go around.

If funding the F-35 meant cutting programs at Scott Air Force Base, would our local politicians still be such big fans of the F-35?
