A 33- year-old man from Mascoutah is in critical condition on Wednesday afternoon after police found him in the city's parking lot with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Mascoutah Police Chief Bruce Fleshren said his department received a report about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday from the man's girlfriend stating she woke up and found a note and the unidentified man and his revolver were gone.
The girlfriend told police that the man, a civilian contractor on Scott Air Force Base, was upset over recent work-related issues, Fleshren said.
The Mascoutah Police Department issued an all-area alert for the man and his car, a black Cadillac.
The car was found in the rear of the city parking lot at Main and Railway Streets at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The man was in the front seat with a gunshot wound to the head, Fleshren said.
The man was taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville.
Fleshren declined to identify the man citing department policy that does not allow the release of names of suicide victims or attempted suicide victims.
