East St. Louis police: Mom throws newborn out of second-floor window

News-DemocratSeptember 28, 2013

— Police are investigating the death of a newborn who allegedly was thrown by his mother out of the second floor of her home on Friday.

The 23-year-old woman was taken to a hospital and was placed on a police hold.

Authorities did not release a cause of death for the baby boy and an autopsy had been scheduled for Saturday.

Police Chief Michael Floore said the mother called police at 10:50. p.m. Friday.

"Upon our arrival, our officers spoke with the mother who told them she was having contractions (Friday) about 5 p.m. Then she had the baby shortly thereafter," Floore said.

The woman, whose name was not released, wrapped the baby in white sheets and tossed the child into some bushes alongside the house in the 500 block of North 23rd Street. Floore said police do not know why the mother threw her baby out of the window. Floore said family members were home when the incident happened.

No charges have been applied for, but the St. Clair County Child Death Investigation team is investigating.

Floore said the woman had been examined at a hospital earlier in the week but she was not ready to deliver her child at that time.
