Reform the fuel standard

September 30, 2013

The BND's recent editorial headlined "Biofuels experiment doesn't add up" is right on the button.

To follow up on the editorial, the BND and citizens should take the next logical step and ask Congress to review and either revise or repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard, which requires increasing amounts of biofuels such as ethanol to be blended into our gasoline supply.

The outdated Renewable Fuel Standard is a classic example of unintended negative consequences. The law has driven up the price of food, cost consumers more for gasoline and is projected to result in a higher release of air pollutants.

Congress should reconsider these outdated biofuels policies.
