Man killed in crash on bridge approach

A St. Louis man was killed Monday night in a single-vehicle accident near the entrance of the Poplar Street and Martin Luther King bridge entrances.

Avionne T. Moore, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Clair County Coroner's office after his 1992 Chevy Geo Tracker rolled several times just before 9 p.m. Monday.

Moore was westbound on Interstate 55/64/70 in the lanes leading to the Poplar Street Bridge when he swerved to get into the lanes leading to the Martin Luther King Bridge, according to Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr.

Witnesses told police he then changed his mind again and swerved back toward the lanes leading to the Poplar Street Bridge. He crossed a grassy median and lost control of his vehicle, which skidded sideways across the median and rolled several times.

Moore was ejected from the vehicle, and evidence at the crash site suggests Moore was not wearing a seatbelt, Dye said.

The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side on the far left shoulder of the interstate, facing south.

The crash closed lanes leading across the Poplar Street Bridge until almost 11 p.m. Traffic was rerouted over the Martin Luther King Bridge and the Third Street exit.
