Late TD helps Triad knock off Mascoutah; Columbia remains unbeaten

Mike Averill's 3-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 5 seconds remaining Friday lifted Triad to a 32-27 Mississippi Valley Conference football victory over Mascoutah.

Mascoutah (2-4, 0-3) took a 27-26 lead with 6:31 left in the game when Mike Biekert hauled in a 43-yard touchdown pass from Tim Parks. The Indians went for two, but the conversion pass failed.

Averill added a 20-yard TD run for Triad (2-4, 2-1) while Adam Nelson had a 44-yarder and Jason Barbour ran for two TDs, one from 53 yards out.

Mascoutah got two TD runs from Misikei Thomsen and Barry Richardson recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Jerseyville 28, Waterloo 24

Austin Lolos scored on a 3-yard run with 35 seconds remaining to help Jerseyville (4-2, 2-1) avoid a home defeat in an MVC battle with the Waterloo Bulldogs (3-3, 2-1).

Lolos had only 18 yards on 18 carries and the Panthers were limited to seven yards on 10 carries by Waterloo, which suffered its first conference loss. Jerseyville quarterback Billy Ritchey was 17-of-30 for 330 yards with three TD passes to Kyle Obertino.

Rick Wiegand, Taylor Vernier and Zach Schaab all had rushing touchdowns for Waterloo.

Columbia 21, Freeburg 14

Columbia (6-0, 4-0) held off the determined Freeburg Midgets (3-3, 1-3) in a Cahokia Conference game.

Freeburg broke on top early on a 76-yard TD pass from Joseph Wolf to Keegan Baxmeyer, but Columbia quarterback Brock McGowan threw a pair of TD passes to Brendan Wilhelm and ran for another TD himself.

Central 34, Red Bud 8

Jacob Timmermann ran the opening kickoff back 92 yards for a touchdown and Cameron Voss ran for two TDs as Central (4-2, 3-1) beat Red Bud (2-4, 1-4) in a Cahokia Conference game.

Cody Frohn added a 25-yard TD run for Central late in the first quarter and Josh Dunning scored on a 5-yard run.

Mater Dei 49, Lift for Life 0

Mater Dei (4-2) got back on track as Sam Toennies threw for three touchdowns and 132 yards on just six completions on 13 attempts.

Jordan Ratermann added 79 yards and a TD for the Knights while Toennies also had a running TD.
