Suspected bomb left at church turns out to be Bible in a bag

News-DemocratOctober 7, 2013

— What police feared might be an explosive device in a bag tied to the door of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witness church Sunday turned out to be a Bible and a note inside the bag.

St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson said his department received a call Sunday reporting a suspicious bag that was tied to the door of the Jehovah's Witness building on Illinois Route 161 near Scott Air Force Base. Authorities feared it might contain an explosive device, so they called in the Secretary of State's bomb unit.

"We found out that the bag had a Bible in it and a note from somebody who said he didn't believe in God," Watson said.

Someone saw the bag tied to the door and was fearful, so they called the police, Watson said.

Asked whether police have any idea who might have left the bag, Watson said it is still being investigated. There apparently were no surveillance cameras on the grounds, he said.
