A person is dead following a crash Friday morning on northbound Interstate 55-70 near Troy.

Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye said the victim, whose identity was not released, was using the entrance ramp to Interstate 55-70 from U.S. 40 at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu and went airborne.

"It's evident the individual was going too fast on the ramp and lost control of the wheel," Dye said.

While airborne, the car was struck by a tractor-trailer traveling north on Interstate 55-70. The semi-truck driver was not injured, Dye said.

The identify of the individual killed in the crash was not released by police pending notification of the victim's family. It's unclear if the victim was wearing a seatbelt.

The entrance ramp of Interstate 55-70 from U.S. 40 was closed for two hours as the crash was investigated.
