Eagle trophy recognizing SAFB support on display in Belleville

— A trophy that recognizes the St. Louis and metro-east area's support of Scott Air Force Base is on display on the second floor of Belleville City Hall through October.

The Chamber of Commerce of Abilene, Texas -- home of the Dyess Air Force Base -- presented St. Louis area leaders with the Abilene Trophy in June.

The traveling trophy has been awarded yearly since 1999.

The bronze sculpture of an eagle in flight has been on display at various locations at Scott Air Force Base and the metro area.

"It's a great, great honor," Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert said. "It says a lot about the community."

Eckert said the Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois worked with Belleville, other cities and the Belle-Scott Committee on the nomination.

The application documented 276 initiatives in the St. Louis area that helped airmen and their families in the past year.
