You talk about the roundabouts in Belleville, what about the stupid roundabout out on Illinois 162 in the middle of nowhere? God knows how much that cost. And there are two they put up in Highland. The mayor of Highland said they got grants to build them. I told him that grants don't come down like mana from heaven. We taxpayers pay for that. Talk about a waste of money.
The biggest scam other than TIF in Belleville and Illinois is they are constantly paying private companies thousands of dollars to do assessments or studies on the condition of buildings. What kickbacks are the politicians getting? Why didn't the city inspectors inspect Meredith Home before paying the Catholic Diocese $487,500? Who was the wonderful buyer who expressed interest in purchasing the building as a home for troubled boys? Did he actually exist, or was this a come-on so Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert would have the city purchase it to keep them out?
Party time downtown
I'm calling about the supposed need for a parking ramp in downtown Belleville. During the Chili Cookoff lots and lots of cars created their own parking spaces. If only people could have seen what the Regions drive-thru lot looked like on East Washington Street. Also, we don't appreciate the person who spilled coffee on the ATM machine. There are those of us who live here. It's our neighborhood and we don't appreciate all the garbage that was left on the sidewalks and grass. To all of the people who come to downtown: Remember that it's my home as well as your place to party.
There goes a job
Come on, people, stop using the self checkout lanes at the grocery and hardware stores. Are you so blind that you can't see this is taking away more jobs -- a job for your children, grandchildren or maybe you when when you lose your job. Unbelievable.
It's not Kern's airport
It seems that St. County Board Chairman Mark Kern has the mistaken notion that he owns Mid-America Airport instead of the taxpayers. His reluctance to share information with the full County Board either shows his arrogance or he is trying to hide something. It is time to have a full, independent audit and investigation of all activities and personnel involved with MidAmerica. Given the normal order of business in St. Clair County, this will probably be money well-spent.
Leading just like Reid
Much like U.S. Senate leader Harry Reid, St. Clair County Board Chairman Mark Kern refuses to allow debate by the elected board members of any issue he finds politically distasteful. Funny, the idea for an airport was conceived, hatched, nurtured and set free in the minds of elected politicians but now today's elected politicians can't be trusted to watch over it?
In an article explaining that St. Paul Nursing Home and the Catholic Diocese are going to be expanding or building in Belleville, Mayor Eckert described their actions as courageous. It seems to be an odd choice of words. Courageous to build in Belleville? What does he know that we don't know?
Be very afraid
If the United States government has this much trouble running itself, why would I want it to have control over my health care as well?
It could be worse
Since the government shut down, the federal employees are the biggest gripers about not getting their money. What a shame. Twenty percent of the people working for the government don't produce a thing. Teachers are just as bad. All they do is grumble when they don't get their money. They should try not getting any pay for five or six months when they go on strike. They would see what's it's all about instead of crying the blues.
Commissary is missed
I am a retiree from the Air Force. I was not able to go to the commissary last week because President Obama shut it down. The military and the retirees pay an 8 percent surcharge on all groceries they buy so they can pay the employees. I don't understand why the employees aren't working.
Belleville misses out
I heard on the evening news that a new hotel and restaurant are being built without the use of TIF money in Pontoon Beach. Why can't Belleville get a hotel or even a new restaurant other than fast food? Our leaders spend money on parks but we don't have a decent one of those, either. Come on, people, wake up. Let's get some new leaders in Belleville.
Don't text and drive
I was at a stoplight the other day and the lady next to me was texting on her phone in a turn lane. When the arrow came on she didn't go and the person behind her had to blow his horn to get her to pay attention to her driving. I will be glad when the police start enforcing the law and these people start getting tickets.
Is this allowed?
How did the resident on the corner of Lincoln and Charles streets in Belleville get permission to permanently park a trailer on the street? Two wheels sit on the street and two wheels sit on the sidewalk. Who does he know? If we tried to do this, we would be ticketed. Someone please investigate.
Both parties to blame
In response to a letter from Justin Gibson: He can't blame just the Tea Party or the Republicans for the shutdown of the government. Blame both parties; they are both equally to blame. They gave themselves an extreme amount of benefits and raises yet they want the taxpayers, military and little people to pay for it. Just remember there is more than one party running this country. We are the government's bosses, we are the taxpayers, we put them in office. Our employees should not be able to give themselves raises or go to war or do a lot of things without our vote.
Funding makes a law
I see another letter from Joseph Reichert on Obamacare. What Reichert, said is correct, Obamacare is the law. However, it has never been funded and therein lies the problem. In the 8 years Obama has been president he's never submitted a budget. In order for a law to become effective, it has to have appropriations. There's never been any appropriations for this law. Therefore, how can they enforce it?
Throw the book
If St. Clair County Judge Bob Haida does not give LaTosha Cunningham the maximum 60 years in prison for the murder of Yoko Cullen, he is committing a crime. The manner in which the poor victim was beaten with tire irons and burned alive merits a 60-year sentence. Plus this is the second time Cunningham tried to kill someone. There is absolutely no excuse for her not serving the full 60 years.
A costly way to build
O'Fallon has hired a construction manager to manage the construction of the new Fire Department headquarters plus a parks building. I have always felt that construction management was more expensive then the hard bid model of construction. While reviewing the specifications I came across a notation I felt symbolizes why this is a bad investment: "It is understood by all bidders that there is not a 'general contractor' overseeing the work of this project." Why would you hire a construction manager and have this in the specifications? It looks like taxes will be going up again for the residents of O'Fallon.
At work or play?
It's 10 a.m. and why is a Cahokia School District worker at McDonald's eating breakfast? Aren't they supposed to be at work at 10 a.m.? I know the person works for the school district because he is in a district pickup truck.
The silver lining found
On Oct. 5 I was going to a car, tractor and Jeep show in Albers but it rained and the show was canceled. I decided to try the food; the pork sausage plate was outstanding. The sausage was perfect and the fried potatoes were the best I ever had. St. Bernard Parish did a great job with the Fall Fest. I was disappointed with the weather but they had many other activities. Hat's off to these hard-working people. I'll be back next year. The food was great and the beer was cold.
I think I can help letter writer Bill Hollis with his questions concerning Glenn McCoy's recent cartoon depicting "angry birds." The Cardinal pictured is a pretty direct representation of the team's mascot, Fredbird. The other half of the equation is the Pittsburgh Pirates' mascot. A pirate wouldn't be worth his weight in gold doubloons if he didn't have a sidekick parrot, would he? It's a moot point since the Pirates now occupy a wet seat on the bench in Davey Jones' Locker.
Don't be so literal
Writer Bill Hollis' letter on Oct. 9 about being confused over the angry birds editorial cartoon is a perfect example of reading too much into something instead of just accepting it for what it was. If he had only looked at the cartoon a bit more carefully, he would have realized it was a cartoon and not a photo from National Geographic. It's pretty obvious to me what it represents and I'm not even a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He should lighten up and not analyze everything.
McCoy's bias shows
I have yet to see BND editorial cartoonist Glenn McCoy draw a cartoon showing the Tea Party members acting like a bunch of spoiled brats. Still lots of anti-Obama cartoons, but none of the Tea Party destroying our economy. McCoy's bias is showing.
Improving with time
Glenn McCoy's editorial cartoons keep getting better and better even though we thought they couldn't be improved upon. Obamacare and the established media is his best ever.
Cruelty is a crime
East St. Louis policeman shoots dog and leaves him for dead. This is unbelievable. The poor dog laid there for 24 hours before he was found still alive. Did this officer file a report on discharging his weapon while on duty? This officer should be charged with animal cruelty as any other citizen would. St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly needs to do his job and do something about this.
I have a solution for those against gay marriage. We can call it a unification, not a marriage. These people would have the same rights yet they don't have to trample over marriage.
Where are the police?
Its seems like no matter what time of day I go through the construction zone on westbound Interstate 64 in East St. Louis, I am the only one who drives the 45mph speed limit. There are construction cones and barrels out, a flashing sign that tells you how fast you are going yet no one seems to care. People fly by me like I am standing still. I almost got hit by a tractor- trailer because he was driving so fast. I called the Illinois State Police about the speeding. The rude officer who took my call said they do what the can. I am sick of tax-supported bureaucrats who could not care less. Once again my tax dollars at work.
Eagle is a rank
Pay attention, young Boy Scouts. After years of Scouting they should know that the level of Eagle Scout is a rank, not an award. The National Scout office approves Eagle projects, it doesn't award them.
