Cougars add two coaches to staff

News-DemocratOctober 14, 2013

— The Southern Illnois University Edwardsville track and field program welcomed two new additions to its staff as Iliyan Chamov and Deserea Howard were added as assistant coaches ahead of the upcoming season.

Chamov will work with the Cougar jumpers, while Howard will focus on the sprinters and hurdlers.

"We are excited to have Iliyan and Deserea join our staff," interim coach Eileen McAllister said. "They are both familiar with the program and the University with Iliyan being a volunteer coach last season and Deserea competing here. They are passionate about coaching and mentoring student-athletes, which is a must."

Chamov joined the SIUE track and field program as a volunteer assistant coach last season, overseeing the development of La'Derrick Ward, the school's first-ever qualifier for NCAA Division I National Championships.

A native of Bulgaria, Chamov served as an assistant coach at Lindenwood University from 2009-2011. He coached seven national champions, 16 All-Americans, and five qualifiers for the World University Games.

As an athlete, Chamov competed at Lindenwood from 2006-2009 and won four consecutive national titles in the triple jump.

Howard is one of SIUE track and field's most decorated alumni. She was a 16-time All-American and two-time national champion for the SIUE women's track and field team, specializing in the 400-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash.

After completing her collegiate career, Howard moved on to the professional level, ranking in the top 20 nationally for three years (2008-2010) in the 400-meter hurdles. Her travels included competitions on the European Circuit in Finland, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Belgium in 2010.

As a coach, Howard worked as an assistant at Urbana High School in 2009, as a volunteer assistant at SIU Carbondale, and most recently as an assistant at Edwardsville High School, where the girl's team won the 2012 IHSA 3A State Championship under her tutelage.

Before moving over to the Cougars' track and field program, Howard worked in the SIUE athletic department as an event administrator from 2012-2013.

"Both of these coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from competing at the professional level," McAllister said. "Their addition to recruiting will be fantastic. Iliyan has international connections, and Deserea has local and state connections from growing up and competing in Illinois. With these additions, I believe we have a very well-rounded staff that is energetic, passionate, positive, and very knowledgeable."
