News-DemocratOctober 16, 2013

The theft of a bottle of booze has caused a Madison County man to be charged with a felony.

Jason K. Whitney, 23 of Alton, is accused of stealing a bottle of liquor from at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday from the Schnuck's grocery store at 2712 Godfrey Road in Godfrey, Madison County Sheriff's Department Capt. T. Mike Dixon said.

A Schnucks employee witnessed Whitney attempting to leave the business without paying for a bottle of liquor, Dixon said. The employee then stopped and detained Whitney until deputies arrived.

According to Dixon, Whitney qualified for and received an enhanced felony charge because of his 2013 conviction for burglary. He was detained in the Madison County Jail on $15,000 bail.
