Conservatives continue to bombard us with that GOP baloney about the increased cost of Obamacare and those job-killing taxes.
Obamacare was originally a Republican idea, promoted by Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole and the Heritage Foundation. Mitt Romney implemented similar Romneycare in Massachusetts in 2006, where it's working fine.
There was no conservative outrage this past decade when premiums doubled, health care profits tripled, pharma profits increased fivefold and hospital charges went up to 10 times over cost.
Job-killing taxes: In 1993 the Clinton administration raised taxes. Republican wizards predicted economic disaster. Wrong. We began the longest sustained economic expansion in American history and produced four years of budget surpluses.
Then came those job-creating Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003. Revenue decreased, surpluses disappeared and deficits soared. Some 900,000 government jobs were created in Iraq, Afghanistan, Homeland Security, No Child Left Behind and the Medicare Drug entitlement. During President Bush's eight years, 1,116,000 net jobs were created; 1,208,000 jobs were created during President Obama's first term in spite of 19 blocked jobs bills and 413 filibusters by Republicans.
Our three worst economic disasters were given to us by four Republican tax-cutting presidents: Coolidge. Hoover, Reagan and Bush 43. They all had the same pattern: Tax cuts for wealthy, boom, bubble and crash.
Great letter about voter suppression by Kevin Gagen on Sept. 13.
